Kanab Itinerary
Kanab is just 5-miles south of Cave Lakes Canyon on Highway 89. The quaint frontier town offers a variety of things to do both in town and in the surrounding areas. Your first stop in Kanab should be the Kane County Office of Tourism, located at 100 East and 100 South.
The tourist center is the perfect starting point for a short walking tour of Kanab's historic downtown. Discover Kanab's pioneer heritage as you stroll past the red brick Sixtus Johnson House, the Victorian-era Heritage House, the Rider-Pugh House built in 1892 and a later Pugh home built in 1906. On your way back to the visitor center you'll pass the Bowman & Co. Building, one of the oldest buildings in town and the site of the original Kanab general store, and the Kanab Hotel where stars lodged while in town filming movies. The famed Parry Lodge, another Hollywood favorite, can be seen on East Center Street.
The next stop for movie buffs will be Kanab's legendary Frontier Movie Town and the Little Hollywood Movie Museum on West Center Street, where you'll find a collection of movie sets, memorabilia, and U.S.-made souvenirs. If you're in a shopping mood, pop into Denny's Wigwam for a whimsical selection of western gifts and collectibles. Then grab a bite to eat at one of Kanab's diverse restaurants. From Mexican and Southwestern to Italian and American, there's a restaurant in Kanab to satisfy every appetite.
After lunch, take advantage of Kanab's sunny skies and gorgeous red rock scenery as you hit the links at Coral Cliffs Golf Course. The 9-hole regulation golf course also features a practice putting green, driving range, and a remodeled clubhouse with magnificent views of the Savage Point cliff line.
If you prefer adventure, local outfitters can arrange ATV rides into Hog Canyon, river rafting trips down the Colorado River, or sightseeing flights from the Kanab airport. From Kanab, it's an easy day trip to visit the hoodoos at Bryce Canyon National Park, hike in Zion National Park, take a dip in Lake Powell, explore the dunes at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, or take in the view from Cedar Mountain. Stop into the BLM's Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument Visitor Center to find out how best to explore the vast and rugged region surrounding Kanab.
A hike, bike ride or drive on one of the local scenic byways will bring you deeper into the red rock landscape surrounding Kanab. Remnants of movie sets in Kanab Canyon, Johnson Canyon, and Paria can be reached via scenic drives conveniently located around Kanab. The Kanab Canyon movie set is your best bet, as Paria is currently under restoration due to arson. The Johnson Canyon set is on private property but a drive through scenic Johnson Canyon is well worth the trip.
History buffs will enjoy a visit to Moqui Cave, just five miles north of Kanab, near Cave Lakes Canyon. The natural history museum features Native American artifacts plus the premiere collection of dinosaur tracks in southern Utah. On your way, be sure to visit the nearby Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, the nation's largest animal shelter.
Wind down from your day of sunshine, sightseeing, and adventure in Kanab with dinner and an evening of musical entertainment and theater productions at The Crescent Moon Theater.
